We provide law school and college students opportunities for meaningful involvement in the important work of the Law Department through unpaid internships and experiential learning opportunities. Participants gain invaluable hands-on legal experience working on diverse projects with Law Department attorneys. All student volunteers are provided with a challenging experience that reflects the demands and rewards of public service, as well as a realistic picture of what it is like to practice law in the public sector. Students are often able to obtain course credit for their time, which must be coordinated directly with their institution of higher education.

All positions are unpaid. Students may obtain academic credit or grant funding through their schools and are encouraged to confirm availability and qualification for these before applying. Positions are available year-round in one semester intervals based on availability. Students can expect to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per week during the fall and spring, and 15 hours during the summer. Start dates, end dates, and hours of work are flexible.

Program 1: Law Students

Students will be given real-world experience with a diverse legal practice, and an opportunity to apply their legal skills to projects and cases that affect the entire Green Bay community. Students will aid our Municipal Prosecutor in prosecuting ordinance violations, draft municipal legislation, respond to records requests, aid in contract drafting, and conduct legal research in numerous areas of law including constitutional law, employment law, land use regulation, and federal jurisdiction. Students will also have an opportunity to attend Council and Committee meetings and learn the skills necessary for representing elected officials.

Hiring Criteria:  successful completion of first year course work required.

Program 2: Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students interested in attending law school will be given an opportunity to see first-hand what to expect from a career as an attorney. Students will be introduced to basic research, aid in drafting municipal legislation, attend municipal court, draft legal documents, and review legal standards. Students will also learn about working in a law office and confidentiality requirements, and have an opportunity to attend Council and Committee meetings to learn the skills necessary for representing elected officials.

Hiring Criteria:  successful completion of at least 5 semesters and an interest in attending law school required.

Program 3: Paralegal and Legal Assistant Students

Students will be given the opportunity of a unique experience working in the areas of municipal law, prosecution, general litigation, transactional matters, public records, law office management, many others. Applicants will work closely with our attorneys and support staff, including paralegals and legal assistants, to gain valuable experience for future employment. 

Hiring Criteria: Current enrollment in a paralegal or legal assistant certificate or associate degree program.
